Travel Insurance Bali: What Actually Pays Out (2026)

Short answer: for most Bali trips, SafetyWing Essential ($62.72 per 4 weeks at ages 10-39, $250,000 medical, $0 deductible for non-US residents, cancel anytime, buy after you land) is the plan to start with. If you will ride a scooter, Genki Traveler (from €52/month, age-based, €1,000,000 medical, motor vehicle use covered with conditions — check the policy wording) is the second option. At 70-74, the only direct travel plan we can name is IMG Patriot; at 75 and over, send us your file and we match it individually.

Do you need travel insurance for Bali?

Not legally. No Indonesian visa category — visa-free entry, Visa on Arrival, the e-VOA or a business visa — asks for proof of insurance, and immigration at Ngurah Rai does not check for it. That is the whole of the legal answer, and we go through it category by category in Do I need travel insurance for Bali?.

The practical answer is different. Private hospitals in Bali treat foreigners as self-paying patients: they ask for a deposit, a card guarantee or an insurer’s confirmation before anything beyond first aid. Without a policy, the bill is yours from the first hour. We do not publish hospital price lists on this page because we only print figures we have verified; documented examples are on our healthcare cost in Indonesia page.

So the question is not whether to insure a Bali trip but which plan pays for the things that actually go wrong in Bali: scooter crashes, surf and reef injuries, dengue, stomach infections that need a drip, and the occasional volcano that grounds flights. The rest of this page is built around those five risks.

Only the figures below come from official product pages. Anything we could not verify is marked “on quote” rather than guessed.

Per-day arithmetic, derived from the official prices: SafetyWing Essential $62.72 ÷ 28 days ≈ $2.24 per day (ages 10-39); Genki Traveler €52 ÷ 30 days ≈ €1.73 per day (starting price, age-based). A two-week Bali holiday on SafetyWing Essential is still billed as one 4-week period.

SafetyWing for Bali: the default choice

Why it fits a Bali trip. Essential is a rolling 4-week subscription: you can sign up from your villa in Canggu the day after you arrive, and stop it the day you fly home. There is no deductible for non-US residents, so a single clinic visit for Bali belly or a stitched-up reef cut is paid without you eating the first few hundred dollars. One child under 10 is covered free per adult on Essential — useful for family trips. Your home country is covered for 30 days per 90 days of insurance (15 days for US residents), which handles the stopover home between two Asian legs.

Where it stops. Two-wheelers are covered only with a valid motorcycle licence and a helmet; the engine-size thresholds you see quoted online do not appear in the official sources, so confirm them in the policy wording before you rely on them. Surfing, diving, kitesurfing and other higher-risk activities sit in the paid Adventure Sports add-on on Essential (included in Complete), capped at $100,000 lifetime. Pre-existing conditions are not covered. Essential has no trip-cancellation cover, and the medical limit drops to $100,000 at ages 65-69.

Complete raises the medical limit to $1,500,000 and is designed for people living abroad; it carries a 12-month minimum and sign-up closes at 64 (renewable indefinitely once enrolled). For a holiday, Essential is the one to buy.

Genki Traveler for Bali: the scooter and sports option

Why it fits a Bali trip. Genki Traveler is a 1-to-12-month travel health plan underwritten by Squarelife, with a €1,000,000 medical limit, a €50 deductible per case that falls to €0 if you are hospitalised, and direct billing where the hospital accepts it. It is sold to travellers up to 69 and can be bought while you are already abroad — with a 14-day waiting period for emergencies if you had no prior cover, so buy it before you land if you can. Its official positioning lists sports (diving, skiing and snowboarding are cited) as included; the exact list and the conditions per activity are not published, so the policy wording is the reference.

Motor vehicles. Motor vehicle use is covered with conditions — check the policy wording. That single line is why so many Bali visitors choose Genki over a standard holiday policy. It is not a blank cheque: the conditions are in the wording, and we summarise the practical ones on the Bali scooter insurance page.

Where it stops. No trip cancellation, no mental-health cover, no dental (except accidents), no alternative or rehabilitative care, no pre-existing conditions. Emergencies in your home country are limited to six weeks per stay, and USA/Canada cover is an option chosen at sign-up.

Which plan for which Bali trip

Two-week holiday in Seminyak or Ubud, no scooter. SafetyWing Essential: one 4-week billing period, $0 deductible, stop it when you land home. Add nothing.
Workation in Canggu, scooter every day. Genki Traveler for the motor-vehicle clause and the €1,000,000 limit, bought before departure to clear the 14-day waiting period. Read the conditions, ride with a helmet, keep the licence in the wallet.
Family with children under 10. SafetyWing Essential covers one child under 10 free per adult. Our family travel insurance guide goes through the details.
Surf or dive trip. SafetyWing Essential plus the Adventure Sports add-on, or Complete; Genki with the sports inclusion confirmed in writing for your activity. Courses are never covered by SafetyWing — the school insures the lesson.
Six months or more, living in Bali. SafetyWing Complete (12-month minimum, sign-up until 64, $1,500,000) if you want an expat-style plan; otherwise Essential month by month. Long stays on a KITAS have their own page: KITAS insurance.
Aged 70 or over. IMG Patriot at 70-74 with its reduced limits in mind; from 75, the contact form. Nothing else on this page applies to you.

🛵 Scooters in Bali: the clause that decides your claim

Most Bali visitors ride. Most holiday policies either exclude two-wheelers or attach conditions that riders never read: a motorcycle licence from home, an International Driving Permit, a helmet, sobriety, and sometimes an engine cap. Break one and the claim is rejected at the moment you need it most.

Here is how the two plans on this page handle it. SafetyWing: covered only with a valid motorcycle licence and a helmet — engine limits are not stated in the official sources, check the wording. Genki Traveler: motor vehicle use covered with conditions — check the policy wording. Neither plan pays for damage to the rented scooter itself; that is the rental company’s insurance (or the deposit you handed over).

Everything else — the police, the rental shops, what happens after a crash, how the licence rule is applied in practice — is on our dedicated guide: Scooter insurance Bali: the complete guide. If you have already had an accident, go straight to what to do after a motorbike accident in Bali.

Ages 70-74: IMG Patriot. Ages 75+: the broker route

SafetyWing Essential and Genki Traveler both stop at 69. Between 70 and 74 the one direct travel plan we name is IMG Patriot International (Lite or Platinum): a travel medical plan for non-US travellers, sold for 5 days to 12 months and renewable. Know the limits before you buy: at 70-79 the medical maximum is reduced to $100,000 on Platinum and $50,000-$100,000 on Lite; “acute onset” of pre-existing conditions is covered only under 70, so at 70+ there is no such cover; the sports rider is available up to 65 only. The exact Lite/Platinum thresholds by age are confirmed on the product page at purchase.

At 75 and over there is no direct travel plan in our catalogue, and we do not send you to an affiliate link. Send your age, destinations and conditions through the contact form: these files are matched individually with a broker. The full age-by-age picture for Indonesia is on Indonesia travel insurance for seniors.

Bali-specific exclusions: volcano, surf, motorbike

🌋 Volcanic ash and cancelled flights

Agung’s eruptions have closed Ngurah Rai airport before, and Java’s volcanoes disrupt domestic connections. Neither Genki Traveler nor SafetyWing Essential includes trip cancellation, so a grounded flight is a cost you carry unless you hold a separate cancellation policy. SafetyWing Complete and dedicated travel policies handle cancellation differently — read the “known event” clause: once an eruption is in the news, new policies generally will not cover it. Medical treatment during an ash-cloud stranding is covered like any other illness or accident.

🏄 Surf, reef cuts and diving

Reef cuts at Uluwatu and Bingin get infected fast; board injuries are routine at Canggu. On SafetyWing Essential, surfing, diving and kitesurfing belong to the paid Adventure Sports add-on (included in Complete) with a $100,000 lifetime cap; organised competition, professional practice and courses are never covered — the school’s insurance must cover a lesson. Genki lists sports as included, with the detail in the policy wording. Divers should read our diving insurance for Indonesia page before booking a liveaboard. For a surf-first trip, the spot-by-spot version of this is our surf insurance guide for Indonesia and Bali.

🛵 Motorbike, alcohol and the police report

Licence and helmet on SafetyWing; conditions per the wording on Genki (see the scooter section). Any insurer rejects a claim where alcohol or drugs are involved, and theft claims need a police report. Pre-existing conditions are excluded by both plans; new and unexpected problems remain covered under the policy terms.

🦟 Dengue, Bali belly and rabies

These are illnesses, not exclusions: consultations, IV rehydration, hospital nights and post-exposure rabies shots after a monkey or dog bite are handled as medical claims on both plans, subject to the deductible ($0 on SafetyWing for non-US residents; €50 on Genki, €0 if hospitalised). Keep every receipt and ask for an English invoice — the main Bali hospitals are used to it.

How a Bali claim actually works

  1. Emergency first, insurer second. Go to the nearest international-standard hospital (BIMC, Siloam and Kasih Ibu are the usual names in the south). Then contact the insurer’s 24/7 line or chat; they can confirm cover to the hospital and, where the hospital accepts it, arrange direct billing so you do not pay upfront.
  2. Collect the paper. Medical report, itemised invoice, prescriptions, receipts, and a police report for theft or a traffic accident. Photograph everything before you leave the hospital.
  3. Submit online. SafetyWing takes claims through its online dashboard and announces a typical reimbursement within 21 days or less. Genki works through its app and direct-billing network. Both want the documents above, in English where possible.
  4. Evacuation. Serious cases leave Bali for Jakarta or Singapore. Ask the insurer to organise it — a self-arranged medevac is the most common way to end up with an unpaid bill. Details on medical evacuation from Bali to Singapore.

Travel insurance Bali: your questions answered

Is travel insurance mandatory for Bali?

No. No Indonesian visa category requires proof of insurance and immigration does not check for it. Private hospitals, however, ask for a deposit or an insurer’s confirmation before treatment, which is why almost every Bali visitor buys a policy anyway.

How much does travel insurance for Bali cost?

SafetyWing Essential costs $62.72 per 4 weeks at ages 10-39 (about $2.24 per day, derived) and roughly $218 per month at 60-69; SafetyWing Complete starts from $177.50 per month (ages 10-39). Genki Traveler starts from €52 per month (age-based). IMG Patriot and other insurers are on quote. We do not publish price ranges we have not verified.

Which travel insurance covers scooters in Bali?

SafetyWing covers two-wheelers only with a valid motorcycle licence and a helmet (engine limits are not stated in the official sources — check the wording). Genki Traveler covers motor vehicle use with conditions — check the policy wording. Damage to the rented scooter itself is never part of a travel medical plan. See our Bali scooter insurance guide for the practical rules.

Can I buy travel insurance after I arrive in Bali?

Yes. SafetyWing Essential can be started while you are already abroad, with no long-term commitment. Genki Traveler can also be bought abroad, with a 14-day waiting period for emergencies if you had no prior cover. Trip-cancellation cover is not part of either plan, so buying late does not lose you anything on that front.

What about travellers aged 70 and over?

SafetyWing Essential and Genki Traveler stop at 69. At 70-74 the direct option we name is IMG Patriot International, with a medical maximum reduced to $100,000 (Platinum) or $50,000-$100,000 (Lite) at 70-79 and no acute-onset cover for pre-existing conditions at 70+. At 75 and over there is no direct travel plan in our catalogue: send us your age and conditions and we match the file individually.

Does travel insurance cover volcanic eruptions and cancelled flights in Bali?

Medical care during an eruption or an ash-cloud stranding is covered like any other illness or accident. Trip cancellation is not included in Genki Traveler or SafetyWing Essential; a separate cancellation policy or SafetyWing Complete handles it under its own terms, and an eruption already in the news is generally a known event that new policies exclude.

The Bali verdict

Holiday or workation without a scooter: SafetyWing Essential — $62.72 per 4 weeks at 10-39, $0 deductible, cancel when you leave. Scooter, surf and higher medical limits: Genki Traveler — from €52/month, €1,000,000, motor vehicle use covered with conditions. Ages 70-74: IMG Patriot with its reduced limits in mind. Ages 75+: talk to us. Whatever you pick, read the motorbike and sports clauses before you ride or paddle out.
