Surf Travel Insurance for Indonesia and Bali: Which Plans Cover a Wipeout (2026)
Short answer: surfing is the one Indonesian activity most holiday policies treat as a “sport”, not a “holiday”. The two plans we name handle it differently: SafetyWing Essential ($62.72 per 4 weeks at ages 10-39, $250,000 medical, $0 deductible for non-US residents) covers leisure sports as standard and puts higher-risk water sports in its paid Adventure Sports add-on, so read where surfing sits in the wording before you paddle out; Genki Traveler (from €52/month, age-based, €1,000,000 medical) lists sports as included, with the conditions per activity in the policy wording. Boards, courses and competitions are never the insurer’s problem. At 70-74 the direct option is IMG Patriot, without a sports rider; at 75 and over, send us your file.

What a surf trip actually claims for
Insurers do not pay for “surfing”. They pay for medical treatment after an accident, and the question is whether the accident happened during an activity the policy accepts. On an Indonesian surf trip the claims cluster around five things: a reef cut that turns septic within 48 hours, a fin or board strike to the face or head, a shoulder dislocation or knee ligament tear in heavy water, a near-drowning or hold-down that ends in an emergency department, and the non-surf stuff that fills the rest of the trip — the scooter ride to the break, dengue, Bali belly on a drip.
Three clauses decide all of them. The activity list: is surfing named as a leisure sport, an adventure sport, or not at all? The competition and instruction exclusion: a lesson, a coaching camp or a contest is outside every plan we name. The medical limit and the evacuation benefit: a head injury at Desert Point or on the Mentawai leaves by boat, then by air, and the insurer must authorise that transport before it happens.
What no travel medical plan does: replace the board that snapped on the reef, refund the charter that lost three days to a swell that never came, or pay the surf camp when you leave early with a stitched-up foot. That is cancellation and property cover, not part of Genki Traveler or SafetyWing Essential; if you need it, it is a separate policy and a separate reading of the “known event” clause.
Surf coverage by product: what is verified, what is “per policy wording”
We print only what the official product pages state. Where a plan does not publish a surfing line, we say so rather than guess.
| Plan | Surfing | Medical limit / deductible | Never covered |
|---|---|---|---|
| SafetyWing Essential $62.72 per 4 weeks (10-39); ≈ $218/month at 60-69 | Leisure sports are covered as standard on the official list. Higher-risk activities — the official examples are scuba diving, kitesurfing, parachuting, paragliding — sit in the paid Adventure Sports add-on, capped at $100,000 lifetime. Where surfing sits: check the policy wording; if in doubt, add Adventure Sports. | $250,000 ($100,000 at 65-69) / $0 (US residents $250) | Courses and training, organised competition, professional practice; pre-existing conditions. |
| SafetyWing Complete from $177.50/month (10-39), 12-month minimum, sign-up until 64 | Adventure Sports included; same $100,000 lifetime cap on that cover. | $1,500,000 / $0 (US residents $250) | Same exclusions as Essential. |
| Genki Traveler from €52/month (age-based), up to 69 | Sports included in the official positioning (diving, skiing and snowboarding are the cited examples). The exact list and the conditions per activity are not published — the policy wording is the reference for surfing. | €1,000,000 / €50 per case, €0 if hospitalised | Pre-existing conditions, mental health, dental except accidents, alternative and rehabilitative care. |
| IMG Patriot International (70-74 only on this site) | The sports rider is available up to 65 only — at 70-74 there is no sports rider. Whether a surf injury is treated as an ordinary accident is a wording question; ask in writing before you buy. | 70-79: $100,000 (Platinum) / $50,000-$100,000 (Lite) | Acute onset of pre-existing conditions at 70+. |
| Other insurers (Allianz, AXA, World Nomads and local plans) | Varies — some name surfing in a base plan, some in an add-on, some exclude reef breaks. Quote via the contact form. | varies | varies |
How to get the surfing answer in writing: email the insurer’s support with “recreational surfing, uncontested, no instruction, reef breaks in Indonesia — covered under which section of the wording?” and keep the reply with your policy. It takes ten minutes and it is what a claims handler will ask for.
What surf travel insurance costs for Indonesia
The verified prices are the base plans: SafetyWing Essential at $62.72 per 4 weeks (ages 10-39; about $218 per month in the 60-69 bracket), SafetyWing Complete from $177.50 per month (ages 10-39, 12-month minimum), Genki Traveler from €52 per month (age-based). The price of SafetyWing’s Adventure Sports add-on is set in the official calculator at purchase and is not in our verified data, so we do not print it — add it in the calculator and read the total before paying.
Derived arithmetic, labelled as such: $62.72 ÷ 28 days ≈ $2.24 per day for SafetyWing Essential at 10-39; €52 ÷ 30 days ≈ €1.73 per day for Genki’s starting price. A ten-day Bali surf trip on SafetyWing Essential is still billed as one 4-week period; a six-week Mentawai season on Genki is two monthly payments.
What we do not print: hospital prices for reef-cut debridement, stitches or a dislocated shoulder at BIMC or Siloam. They vary by hospital and by room, and documented examples live on our healthcare cost in Indonesia page. For everything else on a Bali trip — scooter, volcano, dengue — the travel insurance Bali guide is the companion to this one.
Spots and seasons: where the risk changes
The clause is the same at every break; the distance to a hospital is not. Indonesia’s dry season (roughly May to September) brings the south-west swells that fill Uluwatu, Padang Padang and the Mentawai; the wet season (roughly November to March) turns the east-coast breaks on and the crowds down. Here is how the geography maps onto your policy.
🏄 Bali — Bukit peninsula (Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin, Impossibles), Canggu, Keramas
Shallow reef and heavy crowds on the Bukit; beach-break shoulders and fin cuts in Canggu; a fast right-hander over reef at Keramas. The consolation is logistics: BIMC and Siloam are under an hour away and both are used to surf injuries. Most Bali surf claims are outpatient — stitches, X-rays, antibiotics — where a $0 deductible (SafetyWing, non-US residents) or a €50 one (Genki) decides how much you pay yourself.
🌊 Lombok and Sumbawa — Desert Point, Gerupuk, Lakey Peak
Desert Point is a long, shallow, hollow left over sharp reef, hours from anything that resembles an emergency department; Lakey Peak in Sumbawa is a day’s travel from Bali. A serious injury here is a boat, a road and then a flight to Denpasar or Singapore. This is where the evacuation clause and the insurer’s 24/7 line stop being theory.
🛥️ Mentawai and Telo islands — charter boats and land camps
Remote, powerful, reef-bottomed and a boat ride from Padang. Charter operators carry first-aid kits and a satellite phone, not an insurer. Before booking, get the surfing line in writing from your insurer, confirm the evacuation benefit covers boat-to-mainland transfers organised by the insurer, and give the operator your policy number and assistance number. Trip-cancellation cover for a lost charter is a separate policy — neither plan on this page includes it.
🌴 Java (G-Land, Cimaja), Sumatra (Krui, Nias), Rote (T-Land)
Long drives, small clinics, big waves. Nias and Krui are the classic “stitched up by a local nurse, flown out later” destinations; G-Land camps are hours from Banyuwangi. The same rules apply as for the Mentawai: written confirmation for surfing, evacuation organised by the insurer, documents kept for the claim.
Season note: the wet season also brings dengue and the volcano disruption that grounds flights (Agung, Java’s volcanoes). Neither is a surf exclusion — dengue is an illness like any other, and stranding is a cancellation question, not a medical one.
Injuries, hospitals and evacuation from a surf spot
Reef cuts and infection
The most common claim and the most underestimated. Coral and tropical bacteria mean a cut that looks minor on day one can need debridement and IV antibiotics on day three. Wash it out immediately, get it looked at the same day at a clinic, and keep the receipt: outpatient visits are covered on both plans subject to the deductible, and a claim filed with the first consultation is far easier than one starting at the hospital admission.
Head, face and spine
A board or fin to the head, a hold-down that ends with water in the lungs, a shallow-reef landing on the neck. In Bali these go to BIMC or Siloam; on the outer islands they go to whichever clinic can stabilise, then to Bali or Singapore. The insurer’s assistance line must be in the loop before the transfer is arranged — a self-arranged air ambulance is the classic unpaid invoice. Our Bali to Singapore evacuation guide explains who decides and who pays.
Shoulders, knees and ankles
Dislocations and ligament tears are treated in Bali; the surgery decision and the follow-up physiotherapy are the claim’s expensive part. Ask the insurer whether post-discharge physiotherapy is covered and for how long — Genki excludes rehabilitative care; SafetyWing’s wording sets its own limits. Flying home for the operation is a repatriation question: confirm the benefit exists before you assume it.
Which hospital
Bali’s international-standard options and what each handles are on best hospitals in Bali for foreigners. Outside Bali, assume stabilisation only and plan the transfer with the insurer.
Surfing at 70-74 and beyond
SafetyWing Essential and Genki Traveler stop at 69. Between 70 and 74 the direct plan we name is IMG Patriot International (Lite or Platinum), sold for 5 days to 12 months and renewable: the medical maximum in the 70-79 bracket is reduced to $100,000 on Platinum and $50,000-$100,000 on Lite, “acute onset” of pre-existing conditions is not covered at 70+, and the sports rider is available up to 65 only. Whether a recreational surf injury counts as an ordinary accident on Patriot at 70-74 is a wording question we cannot answer from the official pages — ask IMG in writing and keep the reply.
At 75 and over there is no direct travel plan in our catalogue and we do not send you to an affiliate link: send your age, spots and conditions through the contact form and the file is matched individually with a broker. The age-by-age picture for Indonesia is on Indonesia travel insurance for seniors.
How a surf injury claim works
- Treatment first, call second. Clinic or hospital, then the insurer’s 24/7 line or app. Say “recreational surfing, reef break, no instruction” — the activity is the first thing the handler records.
- Paper. Medical report naming the mechanism of injury, itemised invoice, prescriptions, receipts, and the surf camp or charter’s incident note if there is one. Photograph everything.
- Submit. SafetyWing through the online dashboard, with a typical reimbursement announced within 21 days or less; Genki through its app, with direct billing where the hospital accepts it.
- Transfers. Any move between islands or to Singapore is organised and authorised by the insurer. Do not book it yourself and claim later.
