VISA & LEGAL REALITY

Is Travel Insurance Required for Indonesia?

Short answer: no, travel insurance is not legally required to enter Indonesia. Whether you’re flying in on the Visa-Free entry (for eligible nationalities), Visa on Arrival (VOA), the B211A social/business visa, or any other category, immigration officers at Ngurah Rai (Bali), Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta) or any other airport will not ask for proof of insurance. There is no border-level mandate. The rules visa by visa, and the documents immigration actually checks, are detailed in our Indonesia e-visa insurance requirements guide.

That’s the legal reality. The practical reality is very different. Indonesia has no public healthcare safety net for foreigners — BPJS Kesehatan is reserved for citizens and KITAP holders. Private hospitals like BIMC, Siloam and Kasih Ibu in Bali require either upfront payment or proof of valid insurance before they’ll start non-emergency treatment. Even in genuine emergencies, hospitals will hold a patient’s passport or take a credit card deposit until the bill is settled.

⚠️ What “not required” actually means

It means the Indonesian government won’t check your insurance. It does not mean Indonesian hospitals won’t ask for it. Every week, foreign tourists at BIMC are asked for deposits before treatment can begin. Family members are sometimes asked to wire money internationally before an air ambulance can lift off. “Not required” is a regulatory description, not a description of how the system works on the ground.

For 99% of travelers visiting Bali, Lombok, Komodo or Java, travel insurance is the best money you’ll spend on the trip. It protects you not just from Indonesian medical bills but also from the cascading costs of trip interruption, lost luggage, missed connections and emergency repatriation. If Bali is your only stop, the shortlist is on our Bali travel insurance page, with the Bali-specific exclusions (volcano, surf, motorbike) spelled out.

REAL COSTS

What a Bali Trip Can Actually Cost Without Insurance

These are real numbers from BIMC Hospital, Siloam, and Singapore evacuation hubs in 2026. Each scenario happens to multiple foreign tourists every single week in Bali.

🛵 Scooter accident in Canggu

Broken leg, surgery at BIMC, 5 nights of hospitalization. Single most common claim from Bali tourists. What a crash actually costs, and which policies pay, is in our Bali motorbike accident insurance guide.

🦟 Dengue hospitalization

5 nights with IV fluids and platelet monitoring. Common during rainy season Oct–April.

🏄 Surfing injury at Uluwatu

Reef cuts, stitches, possible shoulder dislocation, concussion. Standard reef-break injury.

🌋 Mount Rinjani trekking injury

Ankle fracture, helicopter evacuation from above 3,000m. Popular Lombok hike.

Priced by aircraft and distance

✈️ Air ambulance to Singapore

Severe trauma, ICU transfer to Mount Elizabeth or Raffles. Won’t lift off without payment guarantee.

🦠 Bali belly + IV rehydration

Severe gastroenteritis, 1–2 nights at BIMC for fluids and electrolytes. Surprisingly common.

💡 Real example: A 29-year-old Australian backpacker fell off a scooter in Ubud in February 2025. Broken collarbone, 3 nights at BIMC, surgery to insert a plate. Total bill: a five-figure sum. She had Genki Traveler at €52/month (age-based), paid two monthly premiums. Net out-of-pocket cost: €50 deductible. The same trip without insurance would have wiped out 6 months of savings.

COVERAGE BREAKDOWN

What Travel Insurance Actually Covers in Indonesia

Travel insurance is more than just medical coverage. The good policies bundle protection for nine specific scenarios — these are what to verify on every quote you compare.

🏥

Emergency medical care

Hospital bills, surgery, doctor visits, prescriptions. Look for a limit of at least $250K — Indonesia’s evacuation costs alone run to five figures.

✈️

Medical evacuation & repatriation

Air ambulance to Singapore (the standard escalation from Bali) plus repatriation to your home country if needed. Critical: minimum $250K limit.

🛵

Scooter / motorbike accidents

The biggest gap in most policies. Verify: engine size limit, license requirement, and helmet requirement. Genki Traveler is the rare exception that covers 125cc with conditions — check the policy wording.

🏄

Adventure activities

Surfing, hiking volcanoes, snorkeling, jungle trekking. Some policies exclude these as “extreme sports” — read the activities annex carefully before buying.

🤿

Scuba diving (separate cover)

Standard travel insurance excludes diving. For Komodo, Raja Ampat, the Gilis and Bunaken, use DAN Europe on an annual membership (price on the DAN site).

🧳

Trip cancellation & interruption

Reimbursement if you have to cancel or cut short the trip due to illness, family emergency, or natural disaster (e.g. volcano eruption or tsunami warning).

🎒

Lost or stolen baggage

Reimbursement for stolen luggage, electronics, cash limits. Bali’s airport and tourist hubs see the occasional theft. Most policies cap individual electronics at an amount set in the wording.

⏱️

Flight delays & missed connections

Compensation when delays force you to rebook flights, ferries to the Gilis, or domestic Bali↔Lombok hops. Usually triggered after a 6–12 hour delay.

📞

24/7 emergency assistance

A real human you can call from a Bali clinic at 3 AM. Not a marketing claim — verify the actual number works internationally before you fly.

PLAN CATEGORIES

Travel Insurance Tiers for Indonesia

Travel insurance for Indonesia roughly falls into four categories. The right one for you depends on your trip length, your activities, and how much risk you’re willing to accept.

TIER 1

Basic Backpacker

On quote — daily rate set by the insurer

Entry-level travel insurance

  • ✅ Emergency medical: per the plan chosen
  • ✅ Basic evacuation
  • ⚠️ No scooter coverage
  • ❌ No adventure sports
  • ❌ No trip cancellation

Best for: Budget travelers staying poolside. Tell us your trip if you are unsure.

TIER 2

Standard Tourist

On quote — daily rate set by the insurer

Genki Traveler (from €52/month, age-based), World Nomads Standard

  • ✅ Medical: $250,000 (SafetyWing Essential) / €1,000,000 (Genki)
  • ✅ Full evacuation
  • ✅ Scooter coverage (Genki)
  • ✅ Adventure sports included
  • ✅ Trip cancellation (World Nomads)

Best for: Most Bali tourists. Ask us — free.

TIER 3

Premium

On quote — daily rate set by the insurer

World Nomads Explorer, IMG Patriot

  • ✅ Medical: on quote (plan-dependent)
  • ✅ All extreme sports
  • ✅ Higher baggage limits
  • ✅ Cancel-for-any-reason add-on
  • ✅ High-value gear protection

Best for: Adventure travelers, divers

TIER 4

Long-term Subscription

$62.72 per 4 weeks (SafetyWing Essential, ages 10-39) · from €52/month (Genki)

SafetyWing Essential ($62.72 per 4 weeks (ages 10-39), no trip cancellation — cancel subscription anytime · 1 child under 10 free per adult), Genki monthly

  • ✅ Pay monthly, cancel anytime
  • ✅ Medical: $250,000 (SafetyWing Essential) / €1,000,000 (Genki)
  • ✅ Buy while in Indonesia
  • ✅ Renews indefinitely
  • ⚠️ No trip cancellation (SafetyWing Essential) — cancel subscription anytime · 1 child under 10 free per adult (Essential)

Best for: 1+ month island hoppers, slow travelers

📌 Important note for Bali: if you’ll rent a scooter (and ~80% of Bali tourists do), Tier 1 plans are usually a false economy — they save a little on the policy but exclude the single most common type of claim. We recommend a minimum of Tier 2 for any Bali trip involving a scooter, surfing or even just hiking up Mount Batur for sunrise.

FIND YOUR PLAN

Compare Travel Insurance for Indonesia by Trip Type

The right plan depends on what kind of Indonesia trip you’re actually planning. Pick the one that looks like yours.

🌴 Two-week Bali holiday

First trip · Seminyak, Ubud, Uluwatu · scooter likely · pool / yoga / restaurants

What you actually need: $250K+ medical, scooter coverage, basic adventure, trip cancellation, solid baggage cover.

Our recommendation: Genki Traveler (€52, varies by age) — covers 125cc scooters with conditions — check the policy wording. For a 2-week trip you can subscribe one month and cancel after the trip.

🎒 1–3 month backpacker / island hopper

Bali → Lombok → Gilis → Komodo → Java · scooter daily · multiple flights · adventure

What you actually need: monthly billing, broad activities coverage, evacuation across remote islands, flexible dates. Travelling on a tight budget for longer? Our backpacker insurance guide for Indonesia compares the cheapest plans that still cover scooters and evacuation.

Our recommendation: SafetyWing Complete (from $177.50/month) for broader medical and routine care, or Genki Traveler (€52, varies by age) if scooters are central to your trip.

👨‍👩‍👧 Family vacation in Bali

2 adults + kids · Sanur / Nusa Dua · 7–14 days · resorts, day trips, water parks

What you actually need: family plan (kids included), high baggage limits, strong trip cancellation, hospital network with pediatrics.

Our recommendation: IMG Patriot Travel Family — comprehensive family coverage with strong direct-billing at BIMC and Kasih Ibu (excellent pediatric care). Or World Nomads for traveler-focused family plans — visit their site for current pricing.

🏄 Adventure traveler

Surfing Mentawai, hiking Rinjani, freediving Nusa Penida, trekking Java volcanoes

What you actually need: explicit coverage for extreme activities, helicopter/boat evacuation from remote spots, gear protection.

Our recommendation: World Nomads Explorer includes a wide range of adventure activities — visit their site for current details. For divers, stack DAN Europe on top for hyperbaric chamber coverage.

💍 Honeymoon & couples

Ubud + Gili · luxury resorts · spa days · couple activities · 7–14 days

What you actually need: strong trip cancellation (honeymoons are pricey), high baggage limits, “cancel for any reason” if booking 6+ months out.

Our recommendation: IMG Patriot Travel Plus with cancel-for-any-reason add-on. Premium tier covers high-value honeymoon bookings if a family emergency requires last-minute cancellation.

🌅 Senior travelers (60+)

Cultural Bali · slower pace · medical history · 7–21 days

What you actually need: insurer that accepts seniors, optional pre-existing condition coverage, high evacuation limit, English support.

Our recommendation: IMG Patriot Travel — entry ages and pre-existing condition options are set by the insurer, on quote. Genki Traveler max age 69. Avoid SafetyWing Essential for over-65 (too low limit for evacuation).

🛵 BEST FOR BALI

Genki Traveler

From €52 (Traveler, varies by age)

Genki is a German brand and the insurer is Squarelife that has carved out a unique niche for Bali tourists. The killer feature: it’s the only major travel insurance that covers scooters up to 125cc with conditions — check the policy wording. For 90% of Bali visitors, that single clause is worth more than the entire premium. The Traveler plan (from €52/month, age-based) includes a €1M medical limit, evacuation, adventure sports, and basic trip interruption. It runs as a monthly subscription, so for short trips you simply subscribe before flying out and cancel after returning.

Strengths

  • 125cc scooter with conditions — check the policy wording — unique in market
  • €1M medical coverage (Traveler)
  • Adventure sports included
  • Buy on the day you fly out
  • Cancel anytime, monthly billing

Watch out for

  • Max age 69 (Traveler) — no Genki plan available over 69
  • EUR pricing (FX rate matters)
  • €50 deductible per case (€0 if hospitalised)
  • No trip cancellation, no baggage — medical-only focus (Genki). SafetyWing Essential: no trip cancellation — cancel subscription anytime · 1 child under 10 free per adult

📌 Our take for Indonesia: default recommendation for most Bali tourists. The 125cc-without-license clause has saved more claims than any other feature we’ve encountered.

💻 BEST FOR LONG TRIPS

SafetyWing

From $62.72/4 weeks (Essential, ages 10–39) — Complete plan recommended for Indonesia from $177.50/month

SafetyWing is the most popular insurance among long-term travelers in Bali. The model is simple: you pay monthly, cancel anytime, and can subscribe even after you’ve already arrived in Indonesia. The Essential plan is the entry-level travel medical option; the Complete plan is what we recommend for Indonesia because it adds routine care, mental health, maternity, and a much higher medical limit ($1.5M vs $250K) — important when a Singapore evacuation alone runs to five figures. Especially well-suited to backpackers doing Bali → Lombok → Komodo → Flores → Java for 2–3 months.

Strengths

  • Monthly subscription, cancel anytime
  • Buy while already in Indonesia
  • Complete plan: routine + mental health
  • Trip interruption included (no cancellation)
  • Easy online claims portal
  • Max age 69 (Essential & Complete)

Watch out for

  • Essential plan caps at $250K — too low for Bali
  • Scooter coverage requires valid license
  • Pre-existing conditions limited
  • $0 deductible for non-US residents ($250 for US residents)
  • Reimbursement model (you pay first)

📌 Our take for Indonesia: the right call for backpackers and slow travelers staying 1+ month. Use the Complete plan, not Essential — the difference in evacuation coverage is worth the higher premium.

👨‍👩‍👧 BEST FOR FAMILIES & SENIORS

IMG Patriot Travel

On quote depending on age, plan, trip length

IMG Global’s Patriot Travel line is the most senior-friendly travel insurance widely available — it accepts travelers up to age 89 with options for pre-existing condition coverage. The Patriot Travel Plus tier adds cancel-for-any-reason coverage that’s particularly valuable for honeymoons and high-value family bookings. Family plans cover children at lower per-day rates. Direct billing is available at BIMC and Siloam.

Strengths

  • Accepts travelers up to age 89
  • Family plans (kids at lower rate)
  • Cancel-for-any-reason add-on (Plus tier)
  • Pre-existing condition options
  • Direct billing at BIMC, Siloam

Watch out for

  • Standard scooter exclusion (need IDP + license)
  • Daily pricing — short trips less competitive
  • US-based — time zone gap
  • Less flexible than monthly subscriptions

📌 Our take for Indonesia: the right choice for families with kids, seniors over 65, and high-value honeymoon trips needing strong cancellation cover.

🤿 BEST FOR DIVERS

DAN Europe (dive add-on)

Annual membership — price on the DAN site

Divers Alert Network is the global standard for dive-specific insurance. Standard travel insurance excludes scuba diving — DAN Europe fills that exact gap. Coverage includes hyperbaric chamber treatment for decompression sickness, dive accident hotline, evacuation from remote dive sites, and search-and-rescue. Essential if you’re diving Komodo, Raja Ampat, Bunaken or the Gilis. Works as a stand-alone policy or stacked on top of your existing travel insurance.

  • Hyperbaric chamber coverage included
  • 24/7 dive emergency hotline
  • Worldwide coverage including Indonesia
  • Stacks with existing travel insurance

PRICING BY DURATION

How Much Does Travel Insurance for Indonesia Cost?

Travel insurance pricing in Indonesia depends on three things: your age, your trip length, and the coverage tier. Here are realistic 2026 ranges for a healthy adult traveling on a Tier 2 (Standard) plan with $250K+ medical coverage and scooter cover.

Trip LengthAge 25–35Age 36–55Age 55–70

30 days (1-month trip)$62.72 (SafetyWing Essential, one 4-week period)from €52 (Genki, 1-month minimum)on quote — varies by insurer and age
90 days (3 months)$188.16 for 3 months (3 × $62.72, derived)from €156 for 3 months (3 × €52, derived)on quote — varies by insurer and age

📌 Cost-saving tip: for trips under 30 days, traditional travel insurance (Genki, World Nomads) is usually cheaper than monthly subscriptions. For trips over 30 days, monthly subscriptions (SafetyWing, Genki monthly) almost always win. The crossover point is typically around the 28–35 day mark.

ACTIVITY-SPECIFIC COVERAGE

What Activities Are Covered (and Which Aren’t)

Indonesia is built for adventure. Bali alone offers surfing, diving, paragliding, ATV tours, white-water rafting, volcano hikes, freediving, and the daily ride to dinner on a scooter. The catch: each of these activities is treated differently by every travel insurance policy. Check this matrix before you book. Surfers have their own breakdown — spots, seasons, reef cuts and the surfing line in each wording — on surf travel insurance Indonesia.

NON-MEDICAL COVERAGE

Trip Cancellation, Baggage & the Other Stuff That Matters

Medical cover gets all the attention. But for tourists, the most commonly used parts of travel insurance are non-medical: a cancelled flight, a stolen bag at Ngurah Rai, a sudden volcano-related airport closure. Here’s what to verify on your policy before you fly.

Trip cancellation & interruption

Trip cancellation reimburses prepaid, non-refundable bookings if you have to cancel before departure for a covered reason — typically illness, injury, family emergency, jury duty, or natural disaster at your destination. Trip interruption pays out if you have to cut the trip short for the same reasons. Indonesia-specific scenarios where this matters: a Mount Agung or Mount Merapi volcanic eruption that closes the airport (this happens), a tsunami warning for the south coast of Java, or a family emergency back home requiring early return. Standard policies reimburse prepaid, non-refundable costs up to the limit stated in the wording. Premium tiers add a “cancel for any reason” option, which reimburses a share of the trip cost set by the wording even for non-covered reasons — useful for honeymoons booked far in advance.

Lost or stolen baggage

Petty theft happens at busy tourist hubs in Bali — Kuta, Canggu, Seminyak. Beach thefts of unattended bags during surfing are common. Most policies reimburse stolen baggage up to a total limit with per-item caps set in the wording (a stolen phone can come back for a fraction of its price). High-value electronics need to be declared in advance on premium policies. Critical: always file an Indonesian police report (Laporan Polisi) immediately after any theft — without it, no insurer pays. Police stations in tourist areas have English-speaking officers who can handle the paperwork in 30–60 minutes.

Flight delays & missed connections

Tropical weather, ash clouds from Java’s active volcanoes, and Garuda’s domestic schedule reliability all conspire to create delays in Indonesia. Most policies trigger compensation after a 6–12 hour delay, paying a daily allowance set in the wording for unexpected hotel and meal expenses. Missed-connection coverage is separate — it pays if a delay on one leg causes you to miss the next (common when domestic Bali ↔ Lombok flights are delayed and you miss your international departure from Denpasar).

⚠️ Document everything in real time

In Indonesia, paper still rules. Keep boarding passes, boarding cards, hotel receipts and police reports in a folder (or Google Drive) from day one. Insurers reject most claims not because of policy issues but because of incomplete documentation. Photos of receipts work, but originals are safer.

CLAIMS PROCESS

How to File a Travel Insurance Claim in Indonesia

Filing a claim from a hospital bed in Bali sounds intimidating but it’s actually straightforward if you follow the right steps. Most travel insurance claims in Indonesia are processed via reimbursement (you pay first, claim after) — the exception is hospital admission with major insurers, which can be set up as cashless direct billing.

Step-by-step claims checklist

  1. Call your insurer’s 24/7 hotline first. Even before going to the hospital. They’ll tell you which BIMC or Siloam location to go to and pre-authorize direct billing if your plan supports it.
  2. Get the official receipt and medical report from the hospital. Indonesian private hospitals provide these in English on request — ask for the discharge summary.
  3. For theft or loss: file a police report (Laporan Polisi) immediately. Without it, baggage claims will be denied.
  4. For flight delays: get a written confirmation from the airline stating the duration and reason for the delay.
  5. Photograph everything — receipts, medical reports, prescriptions, police reports. Cloud-store the photos in case originals are lost.
  6. Submit the claim within the deadline — usually 30–90 days after the incident or end of trip. Late claims may be rejected.
  7. Follow up after 14 days if you haven’t heard back. Reimbursements typically take 2–6 weeks.

Common claim rejection reasons in Indonesia

  • Scooter accident without a valid license — by far the #1 reason for claim denial
  • Riding without a helmet — most policies have explicit helmet requirements
  • Activity not declared (e.g. diving, paragliding) on a basic plan
  • Pre-existing condition not disclosed at policy purchase
  • No police report for theft or loss
  • Alcohol-related injury — many policies exclude injuries occurring while above legal blood alcohol limits
  • Late filing beyond the policy deadline

BEFORE YOU BUY

Quick Buying Checklist for Indonesia Travel Insurance

Five questions to ask before clicking “buy” on any Indonesia travel insurance quote. If the policy can’t answer “yes” to all five, keep looking.

1. Does it cover scooters at the engine size you’ll actually rent?

Most Bali rentals are 110–125cc Honda Scoopy or Vario. Confirm the engine size limit and license requirement explicitly.

2. Is the medical limit at least $250,000?

a Singapore evacuation alone runs to five figures. Anything below $250K is a red flag for Indonesia.

3. Is medical evacuation explicitly included?

Look for “evacuation to the nearest suitable facility” — not “evacuation to home country only” which is useless from Bali.

4. Are your specific activities listed in the activities annex?

Surfing, hiking, snorkeling — never assume they’re included. Check the annex page on the official policy document.

5. Is there a real 24/7 emergency hotline reachable from Indonesia?

Try calling it from outside your home country before you fly. A non-working emergency line is the worst surprise to discover at 3 AM in Canggu.

FAQ

Travel Insurance Indonesia: Frequently Asked Questions

Is travel insurance required for Indonesia?

No. Indonesia does not require travel insurance for any visa category — Visa-Free, Visa on Arrival, B211A, KITAS or KITAP. There’s no border check for proof of insurance. But foreigners cannot use the public BPJS health system, so private travel insurance is strongly recommended for any visit.

How much does travel insurance for Indonesia cost?

A 14-day Bali holiday for a healthy adult under 50 is billed as one 4-week period on SafetyWing Essential ($62.72 at ages 10-39) or one month on Genki Traveler (from €52, age-based). A 30-day backpacking trip is the same single period on either plan. Monthly subscription plans (SafetyWing, Genki monthly) start at $62.72 per 4 weeks (SafetyWing Essential, ages 10-39) and are usually cheaper for trips over 30 days.

Does travel insurance cover scooter accidents in Bali?

Most policies don’t, by default. The biggest gap in standard travel insurance for Indonesia is scooter coverage — and scooter accidents are the #1 cause of tourist injuries here. Genki Traveler is the rare exception that covers 125cc scooters with conditions — check the policy wording. Other plans require a valid IDP with motorcycle endorsement. See our Bali scooter insurance guide.

Can I buy travel insurance after arriving in Indonesia?

Yes — both SafetyWing and Genki allow purchases while already in Indonesia. There may be a short waiting period (typically 1–14 days depending on the provider) for new claims, and trip cancellation generally won’t cover bookings made before the policy was purchased. For most plans (IMG, World Nomads), you generally need to buy before departure.

Is credit card travel insurance enough for Indonesia?

Usually not. Credit card travel insurance typically caps medical at far below dedicated plans (SafetyWing Essential $250,000, Genki €1,000,000), limits trips to 15–30 days, excludes adventure activities, and almost never covers scooters. For Indonesia — with scooter risk, diving, surfing and remote islands — a dedicated travel insurance policy provides much better protection. See our detailed Bali travel insurance comparison.

Does travel insurance cover Bali belly?

Yes. Severe gastroenteritis (the polite term for “Bali belly”) that requires medical treatment, IV rehydration or hospitalization is fully covered as a standard medical claim by all reputable travel insurers. Mild cases handled at the pharmacy aren’t reimbursable. Save the receipts if you do see a doctor.

Does travel insurance cover dengue fever?

Yes. Dengue is a major cause of tourist hospitalization in Indonesia, especially during rainy season (October–April), and is covered as a standard medical event by all major travel insurance plans. Treatment typically involves 4–7 nights at BIMC or Siloam with IV fluids and platelet monitoring — total cost a bill that depends on the hospital, the room class and the length of stay

What about medical evacuation from a remote dive site or trekking route?

All major plans cover evacuation by ground ambulance, helicopter or boat from remote locations to the nearest suitable hospital. From spots like Komodo, Raja Ampat, or above 3,000m on Mount Rinjani, evacuation costs can reach a transport bill priced by aircraft, distance and medical crew — a sum few travellers can pay upfront Verify your plan limit specifically — some basic plans cap evacuation at $50K, which can be tight.

Do I need separate insurance for diving in Indonesia?

Yes, strongly recommended. Standard travel insurance excludes scuba diving or has restrictive depth limits. Hyperbaric chamber treatment for decompression sickness costs a bill that depends on the hospital, the room class and the length of stay DAN Europe (annual membership, price on the DAN site) is the gold standard and covers Komodo, Raja Ampat, Bunaken and the Gili Islands. See our diving insurance guide.

Don’t Let an Unexpected Hospital Bill Ruin Your Bali Trip

Travel insurance for Indonesia starts at $62.72 per 4 weeks (SafetyWing Essential, ages 10-39). A scooter accident at BIMC means surgery, hospital nights and follow-up — all out of pocket without cover. The math takes about 3 seconds.

How we rank providers

Providers are ranked on Indonesia-specific coverage quality, not on commission rates. Our scoring weights scooter coverage terms (license requirements, engine size limits — central to Bali life), medical evacuation limits to Singapore, adventure activity inclusions, age acceptance and renewal guarantees, and how well the geographic scope matches a typical Indonesia trip.
