⚡ SHORT ANSWER

Which travel insurance works for a senior traveller to Indonesia?

Your age bracket decides almost everything. At 60-69 the direct choice is still open: SafetyWing Essential (its 60-69 band, around $218 per month, with the medical limit reduced to $100,000 from 65) and Genki Traveler, which keeps its full €1,000,000 limit to age 69.

At 70-74 nothing in the direct online catalogue accepts a new member. One named option remains: IMG — Patriot International for trip-based cover, Global Medical Insurance for annual cover, both medically underwritten, so acceptance depends on your file.

From 75, no plan we can sell you online applies. The file is arranged individually with our partner broker, and that route works.

Prices above 60 depend on age and medical history almost every time. Where a figure is published we print it; where it is not, we say on quote rather than invent a table.

✅ 60-64 Everything open. SafetyWing Complete closes to new sign-ups at 64; IMG offers lifetime cover only if you join before 65.

⚠️ 65-69 SafetyWing Essential’s limit falls to $100,000; Genki keeps €1,000,000 to age 69.

🚪 70-74 No direct online plan. IMG Global Medical accepts applications to 74, cover ends at 75, medical underwriting.

🩺 Pre-existing conditions Never covered by SafetyWing or Genki. On annual plans: exclusion, moratorium or loading, on quote.

✈️ Evacuation The clause decides destination and means. Ceilings are in the wording — see the evacuation guide.

✓ Why trust this guide

  • Independent site — we are not a licensed broker; complex files go to a partner broker
  • Every product figure comes from the insurer’s official product page, checked on 6 September 2026
  • Above 60 a price depends on age and history almost always. When that is the case we say so and point you to a quote, instead of printing a table we could not stand behind

THE REALITY

Why travel cover changes after 60

Getting covered for Indonesia after 60 is not impossible, but it takes more searching, more money and more patience than at 45. Understanding why makes the rest of this page easier to navigate.

Pricing follows risk, and risk is not linear

After 60 the probability of needing treatment rises sharply. It is arithmetic, not judgement. One verified example: SafetyWing Essential costs $62.72 per 4 weeks in the 10-39 band and around $218 per month in the 60-69 band — roughly 3.5 times more. Annual plans follow the same curve, steeper again after 70.

The entry-age wall

Most insurers set a maximum age for new applicants but none for renewals. The practical consequence is blunt: buy while you still can. Waiting until 72 because you finally feel you need it usually means the choice has already closed.

Indonesia adds its own constraints

Serious cases on Bali, Lombok or the eastern islands are routinely transferred to Singapore. That transfer is the evacuation clause of your policy, or your own credit card. It is the single line seniors should read first.

THE HARD LIMITS

Your options, bracket by bracket

Ages 60-69: the direct choice is still open

Both direct plans still accept you. SafetyWing Essential sells its 60-69 band at around $218 per month, and its medical limit is reduced to $100,000 from 65. Genki Traveler keeps the full €1,000,000 to age 69, with a €50 deductible per case that falls to €0 if you are hospitalised.

Ages 70-74: the direct catalogue ends, the options do not

We will be direct, because most sites are not: none of the plans we can sell you online accepts a new member over 69. What remains is IMG — Patriot International for trip-based cover, with a $100,000 limit at 70-79 and no acute-onset cover of pre-existing conditions from 70, and Global Medical Insurance for annual cover, which accepts applications to 74 with cover ending at 75. Both are medically underwritten, so acceptance depends on your file. It is one route we check for a 70-74 traveller, not a guarantee.

The named 70-74 option

IMG Global Medical Insurance — applications to 74, cover ends at 75, medical underwriting. Pricing is on quote and depends on your file.

See IMG’s plans and pricing — or send us your file and we will check this route and the alternatives for you.

Ages 75 and over: the broker route

From 75, no plan we can sell you online applies. Files are matched individually on age, medical history, trip length and budget, with our partner broker. There is no affiliate link on this route and nothing to sell you here — describe your situation and we will tell you honestly what is realistic, including when the answer is inpatient-only cover.

THE NUMBERS

What senior travel cover for Indonesia actually costs

Two plans on this page have a public price. Everything else — annual health plans, senior-specialty policies — is priced on quote, because after 60 it depends on your age and your medical history.

Age bandWhat is publishedWhat is on quote
60-64SafetyWing Essential around $218/month · Complete from $177.50/month (sign-up until 64) · Genki from €52/monthannual plans

70-74IMG Patriot International (limit $100,000 at 70-79) · IMG Global Medical, underwriting · annual plans
75 and overindividually brokered

We do not print premium ranges by age: they are not published by the insurers, and inventing them would be worse than saying nothing.

What is worth knowing instead of a made-up premium: a serious senior event in Indonesia — a cardiac episode, a fall with a fracture, a transfer to Singapore — is priced by the hospital and by the evacuation operator, not by us. The documented orders of magnitude are on our Indonesia healthcare cost page and the Singapore evacuation page.

THE DECIDING FACTOR

Pre-existing conditions: what is actually covered

This is the question that changes a senior file more than age does.

On the two direct travel plans

Neither SafetyWing nor Genki Traveler covers a pre-existing condition, at any age and at any price. They cover what is new and unforeseen — an accident, an infection, an emergency admission — and that is not nothing.

On IMG Patriot International

From 70 there is no acute-onset cover of pre-existing conditions. Below 70 an acute-onset provision exists; read the certificate rather than trusting a summary.

On annual plans

Three regimes exist: outright exclusion, a moratorium, or a loading on the premium. Which one you get depends on the condition, how stable it is and how long since the last event. All on quote.

Never leave it undeclared

An undeclared condition does not save money — it voids the policy at claim time, after you have paid premiums for nothing. Declare it and let underwriting produce an honest answer.

WHERE YOU WOULD BE TREATED

Hospitals in Indonesia for senior travellers

Know where you would go before you need it. These private hospitals have English-speaking staff and experience with international insurers.

🏝️ Bali — Denpasar and the south

BIMC Hospital (Kuta and Nusa Dua) and Siloam Hospitals Bali are the two names international insurers deal with routinely. Both have international patient departments.

🏙️ Jakarta

Siloam and Mayapada run the largest private networks, with cardiac and stroke capability — which matters, because a senior cardiac event on an island usually means a transfer.

🌋 Islands and remote areas

Lombok, Flores, the Gilis and Raja Ampat have clinics rather than hospitals. A serious case means a transfer to Denpasar, Jakarta or Singapore — which is why the evacuation clause is the line to read first.

A private hospital asks for a deposit or an insurer’s guarantee of payment before a non-emergency admission. Genki can issue a guarantee where the hospital accepts it; on SafetyWing you usually pay and claim, except on large admissions where the assistance line can arrange a guarantee. Call the insurer before treatment when you can.

THE CLAUSE THAT MATTERS MOST

Evacuation and repatriation: what the clause actually says

For a senior traveller to Indonesia this is the most important line in the policy, and the one most often misread.

  • The insurer chooses the destination and the means. Not you. A transfer to Singapore, to Jakarta or home is a clinical and logistical decision made by the assistance team.
  • An air ambulance you book yourself is the classic unpaid bill. Call the assistance line first, every time.
  • The ceilings are in the wording. We do not print an evacuation figure for SafetyWing or Genki, because neither publishes one we can verify — the detail is in the policy document.
  • Repatriation of remains is a separate benefit from medical evacuation, with its own conditions.
  • What it costs without cover is set by the operator, the aircraft and the distance — see the Singapore evacuation guide.

BEFORE YOU BUY

What to check before buying, at 60 and over

1

Check the entry age before anything else

Every plan has a maximum age for new applicants. It is the first filter and the only one you cannot negotiate: SafetyWing Essential and Genki stop at 69, Complete at 64, IMG Global Medical at 74.

2

Read the medical limit for your band, not the headline

SafetyWing Essential advertises $250,000, but the limit is reduced to $100,000 from 65. The headline figure is not your figure.

3

Declare every condition, dated

Each diagnosis, each ongoing treatment, the date of the last event. A broker cannot negotiate a loading on a condition that surfaces later.

4

Read the evacuation clause

On an island, this is the benefit that decides whether you are transferred or stranded. Ceilings and conditions are in the wording.

5

Buy while the choice is open

Most plans renew for life once you are in, but almost none accept you late. Waiting is the one decision that closes doors by itself.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Senior travel insurance for Indonesia: your questions

What is the maximum age for travel insurance to Indonesia?

It depends on the plan, and the published limits are these: SafetyWing Essential and Genki Traveler accept new members to 69, SafetyWing Complete to 64, IMG Global Medical Insurance to 74 with cover ending at 75. Above that, files are arranged individually with a broker. Always confirm the current age cap on the insurer’s own quoting tool before assuming a plan is available.

Can I get cover at 75 or 80 for Indonesia?

Not from the direct online travel plans — they stop at 69. From 75 the route is an individually arranged file, matched on your age, conditions, trip length and budget. That route exists and it works; there is no affiliate link on it. Send us your situation and we will tell you what is realistic.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Not by SafetyWing or Genki Traveler, at any age. IMG Patriot International has no acute-onset cover of pre-existing conditions from 70. On annual plans the outcome is an exclusion, a moratorium or a loading, decided by underwriting and always on quote. Declare everything: an undeclared condition voids the policy at claim time.

How much does senior travel insurance for Indonesia cost?

Where a price is published we print it: SafetyWing Essential is around $218 per month in the 60-69 band, Complete starts at $177.50 per month with sign-up until 64, and Genki Traveler starts at €52 per month, age-based. Above 70 there is no published price — it is on quote and depends on your medical file. We do not print premium ranges by age, because the insurers do not publish them.

Does the medical limit change with age?

Yes, and it is the detail most often missed. SafetyWing Essential advertises a $250,000 medical limit, but that limit is reduced to $100,000 from 65. Genki Traveler keeps its full €1,000,000 to age 69. IMG Patriot International carries a $100,000 limit at 70-79.

What happens if I need evacuation to Singapore?

The assistance team decides the destination and the means, and arranges the transfer. An air ambulance you book yourself is the classic unpaid claim. The ceilings for evacuation are in the policy wording — we do not print a figure neither insurer publishes. What such a transfer costs without cover is on our evacuation page.

Is Genki Traveler an annual expat plan?

No. Genki Traveler is a travel medical plan of 1 to 12 months, with a €1,000,000 limit, to age 69. It does not include routine, dental or optical care. For annual cover as a resident, the routes are IMG Global Medical Insurance with underwriting, or an international insurer on quote — see the KITAS insurance guide.

Can I buy once I am already in Indonesia?

Yes for both direct plans. Genki applies a 14-day waiting period for emergencies if you had no prior cover; SafetyWing lets you start a cycle on the spot. What you cannot buy after arrival is trip cancellation, which neither plan includes anyway.

Do I need a separate policy if I will ride a scooter?

Not a separate policy, but you must meet the conditions. SafetyWing covers riding only with a valid motorcycle licence and a helmet. Genki: motor-vehicle use covered with conditions — check the policy wording. No plan covers an unlicensed rider, and riding without a licence is illegal in Indonesia. The detail is in the scooter guide.

What should I do first if something happens?

Call your insurer’s 24/7 assistance line before treatment when you can — it can confirm cover to the hospital and, where the hospital accepts it, arrange direct billing. Then go to a private hospital with an international patient department rather than the nearest clinic, unless it is a true emergency.
